Dog Training in your home working with your family and dog. Four to six private sessions run approximately 2 hours each and are held in your home once per week. I will develop a training program focused on the specific problems you are having with your dog. Good manners training includes teaching your dog to focus their attention on you, to come when called, to not jump on you and your company, to stop begging at the dinner table, walking issues, potty training, to not dash out the door and whatever other problems you are having with your dog. Obedience training includes teaching your dog to sit, stay, lay down. The training is designed to be fun for you and your dog and I use Positive reinforcement methods only. I also work with scared or shy dogs to bring them out of their shells and enjoy life. I will show you fun games to play with your dog that enrich their lives and train them. Learn about the fascinating ways our dogs communicate with us all the time thru body language.
Training is offered in the Buffalo and Southtowns area. I also provide a dog walking service in the Orchard Park, East Aurora area from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. I am a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), Southtowns Dog Training Club and a volunteer at the Erie County SPCA. Reasonable rates, I am Insured, references available upon request. No dog is too old to be trained. If you love your dog, but don't love some of your dogs behaviors, let me show you how to train your dog in a loving, respectful way.
FREE TRAINING TIP: The most important thing to train your dog is to come when you call him/her. Dog trainers call it a RECALL, and yes for some dogs it does have to be trained. Nothing "bad" should ever happen when you call your dog and they come. If your dog hates to be brushed, or its time for ear drops or a bath, don't call your dog to you. Instead, go to your dog with leash in hand and bring your dog to the grooming area, or tub. Some fun ways to begin training a RECALL is to wait till your dog is in another room and just call him to you. When your dog comes, make it a happy occasion. Give your dog a treat, or have their favorite toy hidden behind you back and have a mini play session. Another idea is to play hide and seek with your dog. Start hiding in an obvious place, call your dog, when he finds you, get silly, tell him how wonderful he is for finding you. Playing hide & seek with the kids will have your dog bouncing from one person to the next. Great fun for your dog and even us. You are teaching your dog GOOD THINGS HAPPEN when they come to you.
If your dog won't come in from the back yard, start working with some really Good food treats, cut into very small pieces. Giving your dog 2 or 3 pieces (one at a time) of your hot dog/chicken or cheddar cheese creates a big incentive for your dog to want to come to you. Work for a week or two doing this every time you call him in, he's getting a big reinforcement for coming to you. Once he's doing this reliably, start easing off the treats. Reinforce every other time, every 3rd time, then 3 times in a row. Become unpredictable with your treats and keep your dog guessing. Remember, never punish or yell at your dog, no matter how long its takes them to come. You will only teach your dog its not a good idea to come to you. Instead, make sure they know its always fun and safe to come to you.
